Hikes take place every Sunday during term time. The bus leaves the quadrangle at 9:30 am sharp. It operates via a prepay system. You can purchase a ticket on our store. The bus costs €12 for the day out but we do have a loyalty card scheme, where if you go on 5 hikes you get the sixth one for free! If you have a full loyalty card please email the committee on firstname.lastname@example.org with a picture of the card.
The hikes are organised to different locations each week, usually around Connemara and southern Mayo to ranges such as the Twelve Bens, the Maamturks, Maamtrasna or Mweelrea. Check the calendar to find out where we’ll go next! We always stop at a nice pub on the way back for a quick bite to eat or drink so bring along some change for that.
Hiking in the Galway region will hardly ever involve walking on paths, cross country is more our style. Be prepared for wet and rocky ground. The fresh Galway weather usually adds to the great outdoor experience, perfect to start a new week. Make sure you do come well prepared with the right gear. Click below for a link to the required gear list, as without this you will not be allowed on the bus. *NO EXCEPTIONS*
Each week there will be two to three different hiking categories: regular, intermediate and sometimes even long. All hikes take the same amount of time, the only difference is the pace. The long walk covers more ground by walking at a faster pace with few stops. Our regular, which we recommend new member start off walks at an average pace with regular stops for food and photos, while the intermediate walk falls in the middle of the two.
The hikes are open to all club members – the three different levels provide something for everyone with a basic fitness, but again, you must have the required gear.
Please note: You must fill out the medical form before taking part in any event. It can be found here. If you have any serious conditions you must notify the committee and if deemed necessary you may be asked to get a signed doctors note that it is safe for you to take part.
There are also weekends away organised each semester, which usually involve a lot of craic and banter, with traces of hiking or climbing!
