It took U2 six minutes to sell out, the 2017 Maamturks Challenge did it in 3 minutes.
Since the 1970’s, our volunteers have always been working to improve the Maamturks Challenge. In 2014, we first introduced the ability to register online. This process dramatically reduced the amount of work our volunteer were required to complete. In addition it saved participants considerable time rather then having to print forms, write cheques and post off letters. In 2016 we streamlined the process further and began using the Eventbrite ticketing system.
In 2014, our online system filled up in 32 days, in 2015 it only took five days. When we introduced Eventbrite in 2016 the challenge filled up in less then 60 minutes. This year (2017) the Challenge was sold out in under 3 minutes.
This was an amazing, and completely unexpected response to the ticket sales. Our volunteer committee had no way of expecting such an influx of people within such a short space of time. As one participant noted, it took U2 a “whole six minutes” to sell out. This response is a testimony to the popularity of the event. It is Ireland’s only hillwalking challenge that is run entirely by student volunteers, completely for the benefit of the public.
For those lucky enough to be offered a place, they will be able to find all the information you need on the other pages of this website and in follow up emails over the next number of weeks. For those who have signed up on the waiting list, there is still a possibility of being offered a place on the 2017 Challenge. If a participant informs us they cannot come, the next person on the waiting list will be offered a place on the Challenge.
We understand that many participants are disappointed about not receiving a place, and we offer our deepest apologies. The event cap is in place so that in the event of an emergency, mountain rescue will have the resources to deal with the incident as well as to prevent excess erosion on the route.
Going forward, our volunteer committee will review this year registration process in light of the unexpected response to the ticket sales. We hope that for 2018 will be able to present participants with a better ticketing system. All information will be released on this website and by announcement email.
